If you go west
from the A1 you will come across a local inn, the Blue Cow, situated on
the borders of Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Rutland in the picturesque
village of South Witham. South Witham is the largest Knights Templar site
in Europe and is the source of the River Witham which flows through
Lincoln.
This hospitable
Inn is formerly of the Tollmarche Estate, who, because of their political
leanings, had a liking for the colour blue. This led to their
workers being paid in blue tokens. These tokens could only be spent in
places with the prefix of 'Blue' , the Blue Cow being one of these very
establishments.
With its exposed
stone walls, beamed ceilings, log fires and slab stone floors the Blue Cow
Inn is a charming place to stay. All rooms have en-suite facilities,
central heating, tea and coffee. There are telephoning and faxing
facilities, and a cooked full English breakfast is also available.
The Blue Cow Inn also boasts a restaurant area and its own brewery.
It has a beautiful garden and patio, all surrounded by rolling countryside
with grazing horses and goats, with a stable block for their own and any
visitors horses. They really can cater for all!
Since March 1997
Dick has been brewing his own beer in the micro-brewery at the rear of the
Inn. Thirlwell's Best Bitter and Thirlwell's Cuddy Bitter are 3.8% by
volume. The Blue Cow Thirlwell Best Bitter came third in the
Campaign for Real Ale's Champion Beer of Lincolnshire contest two years
running. Guided tours of the micro-brewery are available.
A chauffeur
service is available for people using the pub restaurant - anyone within a
ten mile radius of the Inn can have a free lift in the mini bus as long as
they are a party of eight or more using the restaurant.
